Division of Historic Preservation

This department conducts historic preservation programs aimed at identifying, evaluating, preserving and interpreting national historic resources which include monuments. The Division is comprised of two sections:

The Historic Preservation Services Section

This Section provides technical assistance for preservation projects, reviews of tax exempt applications and provides architectural support for the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation programs. Additionally, this Section is responsible for monitoring public and private actions for compliance with preservation laws defined under the Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Act (1998) & Regulations (1999), and represents historic preservation interests on various state and land acquisition and resource management committees.

The Survey and Registration Section

This section coordinates the development of the National Register of Historic Resources throughout The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.  The unit also provides assistance to the public in the preparation of nominations of significant historical resources to the National Register of Historic Resources, processes these nominations, and provides staff support to the Special Project Coordinating Committee (which reviews applications submitted for the grant of tax concessions). The Section also administers The Bahamas Historic Marker program, which selects and/or coordinates the design and installation of appropriate signage for historic properties.
